Elenino Lake

Photo source: bg.wikipedia.org If you love nature and dream of admiring the views of ancient forests, snow-capped peaks and endless blue lakes, we offer you a short trip to one of the most beautiful lakes in our country - Elenino Lake. Where is? Elenino Lake is located in the Rila Mountains and is the largest of the three lakes that form a lake group called Elena Lakes. The lake is located at 2479 meters above sea level, and in its waters are reflected four of the most beautiful peaks in Rila - Orlovets, Malyovitsa, Popova Kapa and Golyam Kupen. In terms of size, the lake can hardly be ranked among the largest lakes in the mountain, but with its length of 220 meters, width of 62 meters and depth of up to 5 meters is the largest and most beautiful of the three Elena lakes. Its shape is slightly elongated and irregular, and its shores are rocky. The lake is filled mainly by the melted snow. Photo source: bg.wikipedia.org Legend of the lake Like almost all of the natural attractions, Elenino Lake has its own beautiful and very romantic legend. According to the story, many years ago, during the Turkish slavery, in Samokov lived a wonderfully beautiful girl named Elena. One day the Turkish pasha Selim came to visit the town, there he saw Elena and asked the residents of Samokov to sell him the beautiful girl or otherwise he was going to take their property. The headmans came together and did not think much, but sold the girl to Selim Pasha. However, Elena managed to escape while they were on the way to her new home, and she hid at the mountains. There she was met by the detachment of Malyo Voyvoda and the girl became part of his group. The years passed, and the girl became one of the best archers of the detachment and did not miss a battle with the Turkish troops. Driven by her desire for revenge, Elena does not allow herself to have feelings, but the heart is hard to command and she fell in love with the flag bearer of the group. Although the girl loved him with all her heart, she did not confess her feelings to him because she believed that the revenge was more important than love. Photo source: bg.wikipedia.org And so one day Elena finally managed to find Selim Pasha and took revenge on him. She killed the Turk with a precision shot, but unfortunately during the shooting she was badly hurt. Her partners, who saw that she was getting weaker and would not survive, took her high in the mountains and laid her on the shore of one of the most beautiful and clear lakes. With the last of her strength, Elena finally confessed her love to her beloved and realized that because of the revenge she had lost the most important and valuable thing in life - her love. After her death, Elena was buried on the shores of the lake, and it has been named after her ever since - Elenino Lake. Photo source: luckybansko.bg How do you get there? As the lake is located on the way of the tourist trail for climbing Malyovitsa peak, the only way to reach it is to take the route. Route of Malyovitsa CMS - Malyovitsa peak The route starts from Malyovitsa CMS in the Mecha Polyana area (about 20 km from Samokov). You can reach the area by car, which you must leave in the parking lot in front of the CMS "Malyovitsa" and walk along the trail. Photo source: bg.wikipedia.org Stage 1 - Malyovitsa CMS - Malyovitsa hut The distance from the center to the hut at a moderate pace and without much need for rest is about 35 - 40 minutes. The path you have to follow is marked with blue and there are no forks, so there is nowhere to go wrong. This stage of the route is of low difficulty and with a relatively small slope, so even if you are not one of the best prepared hikers, you won’t find it difficult. Photo source: bg.wikipedia.org Stage 2 - Malyovitsa hut - First and Second terrace If you get to the hut, it is good to eat, relax and most of all do not forget to refill with water, because the steep slope starts up and there is no place to pour water. After Malyovitsa hut you should follow the path marked with white & blue. The ascent becomes more difficult as the vegetation gradually decreases and the displacement increases little by little. About half an hour after the hut you will reach the first terrace of the trail, where you can take another short break to relax and enjoy the views that will unfold in front of your eyes. The ascent continues to the Second Terrace. The path you have to follow is now marked in red, but even if you don't pay much attention, you can't go wrong, as this is the only path that leads to Malyovitsa. The route to the Second Terrace has an acceptable slope, but the path becomes more and more rocky and there is almost no vegetation. You will know that you have passed the Second Terrace when you see a large rock with memorial plaques placed on it. (Memorial plaques of Bulgarian climbers who died while climbing native and foreign peaks). Photo source: bg.wikipedia.org Stage 3 - Second terrace - Elenino Lake If you decide to reach only Elenino Lake and not finish the trail by climbing Malyovitsa Peak, you don’t have a much transition left. From the Second Terrace you will reach Elenino Lake in about an hour if you walk at a medium pace. You have to be more careful here, because the displacement is quite large, the path is extremely rocky, and there are several super steep places, so if you are not careful you can slip. But if you manage to cope, we assure you, the moment you see the beautiful lake you will forget the exhaustion and fatigue. Photo source: wikimapia.org If you still have the strength after a 3 hours of walking and decide to make a little more effort and conquer the peak, you have to overcome only one more stage of the route. Stage 4 - Elenino Lake - Malyovitsa Peak In the beginning the ascent to the top is quite difficult, as the terrain has a large displacement and is very rocky. Fortunately, the steep area is not big and after overcoming it you will have to walk along the ridge of the mountain, where the terrain is flat and the views are amazing. Photo source: bg.wikipedia.org If you turn around and look back, you will see the whole group of Elena lakes, and if you look at the distant valley to the south you will see the Rila Monastery. In about 30 minutes of climbing with medium difficulty you will reach your final destination - peak Malyovitsa. In front of you will be an incredible view of Mount Musala, the Ribnovo Lake, and if it is sunny and clear you can see in the distance Pirin and even Vitosha Mountains.
